Betsy Phillips

“Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Betsy Phillips’ voice is as serene and calming as the flatlands of her native midwest. Touched with a hint of sadness but an assurance that everything will be alright, Phillips’ voice is a manifestation of her steadfast and patient mindset.“I didn’t move to Nashville knowing how to write great songs, but I decided that writing songs was something I was going to do, and something I was going to be good at.” For the making of her new EP Like We’re Talking, Phillips reached out to producer Dan Knobler (Lake Street Dive, Rodney Crowell). The recording features guitarist Anthony da Costa (Sarah Jarosz, Joy Williams), and bassist Ethan Jodziewicz (The Milk Carton Kids), both of whom compliment Phillips’ voice with careful attention to detail and musicality. The result is stunning, with material touching on everything from personal relationships to Phillips’ childhood home in “We Don’t Stay”. From the sounds of Like We’re Talking, Phillips is paving her own artistic path with a steady and deliberate beauty”.

When did you know you wanted to be a musician?
Since I was a kid. I remember daydreaming about putting out an album when I was about 8 years old!

Are you trained? How did you develop your skills?
Kind of! I’ve had a lot of classical voice lessons and loved choir in High School! I’ve also taken some guitar and piano lessons.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Lori McKenna, Van Morrison, Patty Griffin, and The Weepies are just a few!

How would you describe your sound?
Singer/songwriter with a touch of Americana.

What’s your favourite tune in your repertoire and why?
Whenever I have a full band I love playing my song “I Heard That Train.” It’s an unreleased one!

What can audiences expect from one of your live shows?
Honest songs and some awkward/witty banter.

Where can we find your music?
My music is available on all digital platforms! I’m also on Instagram @betsy__phillips.
