The Symbiotic Relationship Between TV Shows, Movies and Gaming

By // Games

Over the years, we have been used to seeing great books and plays turned into movies, from Little Women to Romeo and Juliet. In more recent times, with developments in digital technology, movies themselves, and TV shows have begun to have their own influence on the world of gaming.

This influence can be seen across a variety of media from online casino games to video games. People get to interact with popular characters such as King Kong and The Terminator. It’s interesting to take a look at this phenomenon in more detail.

Casino games online

Just as video game manufacturers have seen the value of the influence of movies and TV shows, so have online casino operators. Brands like incorporate TV and movie-themed slot machines in their offering of casino and sports betting.

They are not the only ones. Entertainment fans can enjoy a wide range of casino game titles, such as Terminator 2, Planet of the Apes, Ted and Gladiator, all of which have their origins in the movie world. It’s important for casino game software developers and online casino operators to attract players with these popular games as the world of online casinos is highly competitive.

Video and PC games influenced by TV and movies

It’s not just online casino games that have started to be influenced by the wider world of entertainment. The same applies to video games.

For instance, Star Wars, a movie franchise that has made history has also led to several video game titles including a racer game based on The Phantom Menace, Nintendo’s Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Lego Star Wars for younger players.

Other famous movies, such as Blade Runner and Terminator, have been equally as inspirational when it comes to the development of video games.

It’s also important to note that this relationship between video games and movies works both ways. Several video games have influenced big-screen releases with some being more successful than others.

The most successful transitions from video game to movie include the Pokémon movies which proved popular with fans of the gaming franchise. The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie also achieved a good level of success having grossed $70 million on its opening weekend. The most successful gaming based movie franchise so far is Resident Evil which has grossed more than $1.2 billion globally. Netflix is also making an original TV series based on the Resident Evil brand.

Some video game inspired movies, such as Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed, have achieved box office success despite receiving bad reviews. This shows just how strong a recognised gaming brand can be.

Given the success of TV and movie related online casino games and video games, the crossover between media seems set to continue. The same can be said for movies influenced by video games with titles such as Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider 2 set for release in 2021.
