Canada’s Love of Mobile Gaming Continues As Google’s Play Pass Launches

By // Games

Smartphones and tablets have become indispensable in many ways across the last few years, but they have particularly come into their own in terms of their ability to provide both entertainment and some high-quality gaming action.

Now, Canadians have another service to make use of as they look to get the most out of their mobile devices, with Google confirming the launch of a new platform earlier this month.

Ad-free access to apps

Originally launched in the US in September last year, the Google Play Pass is now available on Android devices in Canada as well as in other countries such as France, Germany, the UK, and New Zealand.

Under the terms of the service, users pay a subscription in order to get access to a huge number of apps and games without having to see ads or make in-app purchases. More than 350 apps and games were unlocked when the platform made its US debut, but Google confirmed in its announcement on Canada that it has also added a further 150 new titles to its catalog of content in recent months. Notable new additions in a gaming sense include Sonic the Hedgehog, while independent titles like Sally’s Law and Teslagrad have also become available.

In addition, it was confirmed that some new titles are set to premiere on the Play Pass service later this year, while a new annual subscription option has also been introduced as an alternative to the current monthly set-up. Google added that a one-month trial is also available for those who want to sample everything that the service has to offer before ultimately choosing to sign up on a full-time basis.

Our country’s love of mobile gaming

The introduction of the service in Canada is exciting for numerous reasons, but it could be argued that it specifically builds on the huge love that many people within the country have for gaming on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

Mobile gaming is thriving all over the world but, at the start of last year, VentureBeat reported on the intriguing findings of a joint study prepared by the NPD Group and Sensor Tower. It found that the number of mobile gamers across the US and Canada grew by five percent in 2018 to reach a total of 210.9 million. According to the experts behind the research, 60 percent of people in the countries play mobile games, with 92 percent of adults most likely to play on smartphones.

Canada’s association with mobile entertainment extends beyond purely video gaming as well, as the country has strong links to other areas such as the online casino industry. As this guide to the best online casinos in Canada explains, such sites have only been available in the country for a short amount of time but have had a major impact. For example, the page explains how a Canadian actually won the biggest ever mobile progressive jackpot while playing on the Mega Moolah slot in 2015. The prize? A massive $7.5 million.

An exciting new addition

Mobile forms of gaming have been having a huge impact across the globe in recent years, but all of the above highlights how Canada has really taken to the concept.

The Google Play Pass is an exciting new addition to the mobile gaming options available in the country and it will be interesting to see just how many people choose to sign up and make use of the offering. With mobile gaming looking like it is here to stay, it will also be fascinating to see whether rival services may also pop up to compete with this platform.
