Top 5 Rugby Apps for the World Cup & Beyond

By // Sports

In an age when no one can leave their seat, let alone their house, without their phone, technology can be key to gaining further insight into your favourite game. Sports Apps are the fastest and most convenient way to receive up-to-date information on yours, and your competitor’s team. Apps are also gaining popularity for sports betting, with some allowing you to play free online slot machines during a particularly boring break between matches.

Today’s focus, however, is on information and stats to help make the most out of the coming season and the build-up to Rugby World Cup 2019. All my picks are available for free on both iOS and Android devices. So here is my Top 5:

Rugby World Cup 2019:

This has to be the quintessential App for the coming 9 months. Keep yourself up-to-date with the latest injury news, coach retirements and in form teams, so there will be no surprises come September (and claim you were the first to know Japan could topple the Boks!). A great selection of qualification videos, 2015 archive highlights and pre-tournament news.

Ultimate Rugby:

The world’s most popular rugby app has to get a mention here, and for good reason. Whichever team you support, be it northern or southern hemisphere, they have you covered with real-time live scores, push notifications and a great live chat to help you interact with fellow supporters. The 2019 version is rumoured to have taken on an extremely high amount of supporters’ feedback in the update; watch this space.

RBS Six Nations:

The Northern Hemispheres premier rugby competition will be kicking off again this coming February, and with it being World Cup year there’s an extra layer of anticipation around it. Being the official App of the Six Nations, it brings you closer to the action with a well-rounded collection of stats, profiles and live commentary. Will the luck of the Irish prevail for the second year in a row after beating the mighty All Blacks this November?

World Rugby; Laws of Rugby:

What better way to gain a further understanding of what is happening on the field than this in-depth look into the finer rules of the game. World Rugby’s; Laws of Rugby has over 80 embedded videos, with 200 more available to stream, clarifying the laws through animation. Certainly a must for referees and coaches amongst us, but also invaluable for those who want to prove Richie McCaw was always cheating!

Sky Sports App:

Wrapping up our top 5 is Sky Sports, coming in fifth only due to the fact that you must be a Sky subscriber to make the most out of. But, with Super Rugby, Currie Cup, Mitre Cup, Top 14 and the Sevens World Series all being shown live, you’ll be able to watch on-the-go and in real time.
