Unlike most drama build-ups preceding MMA fights, the Vitor Belfort vs. Lyoto Machida match has proven to be a class act in every meaning of the term. The main card event between these two former light heavyweight champions was confirmed and settled in February after some speculation surrounding other possible adversaries for Machida, but the bout with fellow countryman Belfort will finally take place on May 12th at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Both veteran fighters recorded victories in their last encounters during 2017 and Belfort is expected to deliver his last show prior to finishing his MMA contract run. Even though some rumors spread about Machida similarly putting an end to his career with the UFC, he recently made some very clear overtures to the contrary.
Enter the Dragon
“The Dragon” -as Lyoto Machida is widely known in the UFC world- was extremely candid on Instagram in recent days, expressing his satisfaction over the calm and respectful attitudes demonstrated by both competitors ahead of the big fight. Machida is also pleased that he will be facing off Belfort in what is to be The Phenom’s last MMA performance, whom he considers a good friend and a worthy rival. Belfort defeated Nate Marquadt in June of last year after a short string to close defeats, while Machida also secured a win against Eryk Anders during UFC Fight Night 125. Odds Experts favor The Dragon over Belfort, but just slightly. Additional Evening Attractions
UFC Fight Night 224 will also provide us with a defining division title match between the women’s bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington, where Brazilian Nunes stands as the outright favorite. The Lioness did battle with Valentina Shevchenko for a split decision on the 5th round during UFC215 in September of the previous year, while Colorado Springs-native Pennington is carrying 4 straight wins under her belt, having beat Miesha Tate by unanimous decision just last November. The evening’s other most compelling encounter belongs to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Kelvin Gastelum. Souza’s chart includes a technical knockout victory that put an end to Derek Brunson’s hopes before the first round was over, and Gastelum performed similarly vs. Michael Bisping at the Shanghai Fight Night on Nov. 2017.
Tune in to pay-per-view on May 12th to bear witness to Vitor Belforts farewell showdown against Machida, and don’t forget to get your preferred betting account up and running ahead of UFC224 to reap some additional wins alongside your favorite MMA fighters. Until next time!
